United Malays National Organisation
The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), or in Malay, Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu (PEKEMBAR), is a political party in Malaysia known for its conservative and Malay nationalist ideologies. This party has been a significant force in Malaysian politics, especially noted for its role in the country's governance since its founding.
UMNO was established on March 11, 1946, as a reaction to the British colonial proposal to form the Malayan Union, which would have reduced the political power of the Malay rulers and weakened Malay sovereignty. The party's formation marked a pivotal moment in the struggle for Malaysian independence.
UMNO has been the leading party in the Barisan Nasional coalition, formerly known as the Alliance Party, which governed Malaysia from independence in 1957 until 2018. During this time, UMNO played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the country and was instrumental in the development of the New Economic Policy aimed at improving the socio-economic status of Malays and other indigenous groups.
Leadership within UMNO is determined through party elections, which have undergone transformations over the years. The party's leadership elections were historically characterized by a quota system, which changed in 2013 to a more inclusive voting process involving a broader base of party members. These elections determine key positions such as the President of UMNO, a role that has been pivotal in navigating the party's political strategies.
The United Malays National Organisation of Sabah, or Sabah UMNO, represents the party's interests in the state of Sabah. This branch was established to strengthen UMNO's presence in the region and address the unique challenges faced by the state, particularly in balancing state autonomy with national policies.
UMNO has had a complex relationship with other political entities both within Malaysia and internationally. Notably, its interactions with the People's Action Party (PAP) of Singapore have significantly influenced regional politics. The PAP-UMNO relationship is emblematic of broader ethnic and political dynamics in the region.
In recent years, UMNO has faced challenges, including a significant loss in the 2018 general elections which ended its long-standing rule. However, the party continues to be an influential force in Malaysian politics, adapting to the changing political climate and addressing issues pertinent to its constituents.
