Barisan Nasional Coalition

Barisan Nasional (BN), meaning National Front in English, is a prominent political coalition in Malaysia. Established in 1974, BN emerged as a successor to the three-party Alliance Party, which was initially comprised of the United Malays National Organisation, the Malaysian Chinese Association, and the Malaysian Indian Congress.

Formation and Structure

The coalition was officially registered in June 1974. It was founded as a broad coalition of nine parties under the leadership of then Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak. BN's initial formation also included regional parties from Sabah and Sarawak, such as the Sabah Alliance Party, the Sarawak United Peoples' Party, and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu.

Political Dominance

BN was a dominant force in Malaysian politics for decades. It first tasted electoral success in the 1974 general election, running as a grand coalition and securing a substantial victory. This success solidified its influence in Malaysian governance.

Throughout its history, BN has undergone various changes and faced numerous challenges. In 1977, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) was expelled from the coalition following internal conflicts in the Kelantan state legislature. This marked a significant shift in the coalition's composition.

Recent Developments

In the 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis, BN returned to power by aligning with a Perikatan Nasional (PN)-led government. However, the coalition faced one of its most significant setbacks in the 2022 general election, where it fell to third place, behind Pakatan Harapan (PH) and PN. Despite the electoral defeat, BN managed to maintain its influence by supporting its former rival, PH, under a national unity government known as the "Madani" government.

BN continues to play a vital role in Malaysian politics. The coalition's ability to adapt and form strategic alliances has kept its influence alive despite changing political landscapes.
