Pakatan Harapan

Pakatan Harapan (PH; stylised as HARAPAN; English: Alliance of Hope) is a prominent political coalition in Malaysia. It is primarily composed of centrist and centre-left political parties. The coalition was established in 2015 as a successor to the defunct Pakatan Rakyat, after differences led to the dissolution of the earlier coalition.

Formation and Political Structure

Pakatan Harapan consists of several key political parties, including the People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat, PKR), the Democratic Action Party (DAP), the National Trust Party (Parti Amanah Negara), and the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, BERSATU). BERSATU joined the coalition in 2016 under the leadership of Mahathir Mohamad, a prominent Malaysian statesman, who played a crucial role in the coalition's success.

The coalition is led by Anwar Ibrahim, a significant figure in Malaysian politics and a leading advocate for reform. Anwar Ibrahim has been instrumental in shaping the coalition's policies and strategic direction since 2020. Under his leadership, Pakatan Harapan emphasizes issues like social justice, economic reform, and anti-corruption.

Political Achievements

One of the coalition’s most notable achievements came during the 2018 Malaysian general election. Pakatan Harapan successfully unseated the long-standing Barisan Nasional government, which had been in power since Malaysia's independence in 1957. This victory marked a significant turning point in Malaysian politics, underscoring a desire for change among the populace.

Following the election, Mahathir Mohamad became the Prime Minister, and Anwar Ibrahim was granted a royal pardon, allowing him to re-enter politics officially. The coalition focused on reforms aimed at tackling corruption, revamping economic policies, and enhancing democratic practices.

Challenges and Developments

Despite their earlier success, Pakatan Harapan faced significant challenges, including political instability and internal disagreements. The coalition's tenure was marked by a tumultuous political landscape, which eventually led to the resignation of Mahathir Mohamad and a shift in government in 2020.

In the 2022 Malaysian general election, Pakatan Harapan continued to play a crucial role in shaping Malaysia's political scene. The coalition formed electoral pacts with other political entities to bolster its influence and maintain its vision for Malaysia's future.
