Historical Background
Hartford was established in the early 17th century and was initially settled by European settlers who were Puritans. Notably, Thomas Hooker, a prominent Puritan minister, played a significant role in Hartford's founding. In 1638, Hooker delivered a sermon that significantly influenced the creation of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, a document considered by many historians to be one of the first written constitutions that created a stable government.
Hartford alternated with New Haven as dual capitals of Connecticut from 1664 until 1875, when Hartford became the sole capital.
