East Hartford is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. Situated on the east bank of the Connecticut River, directly across from the city of Hartford, East Hartford is a town rich in history, culture, and economic significance.
History
The area now known as East Hartford was originally inhabited by the Podunk Indians, part of the River Tribes that lived along the Great River and its tributaries. The Podunks occupied the territory in what are now the towns of East Hartford and South Windsor. European settlement began around 1635 when Thomas Hooker and his followers established the city of Hartford. Initially part of Hartford, East Hartford became an independent town in 1783.
In 1929, Frederick Rentschler moved Pratt & Whitney production to East Hartford, significantly impacting the town's development. The site included Rentschler Field, an airport operational from 1931 to 1999, which was later transformed into a stadium seating 40,000 people.
