Keolis Downer
Keolis Downer is a prominent public transport operator in Australia, emerging as a collaboration between Keolis and Downer Group. This partnership, initiated in 2009, has considerably influenced the management and operation of various transportation services, primarily trams, trains, and buses across the nation.
Melbourne Tram Network
In June 2009, Keolis Downer was awarded the franchise to operate the Melbourne tram network, taking over from the previous operator, TransdevTSL. This contract allowed Keolis Downer to manage the network under the well-known Yarra Trams brand, a term familiar to Melbourne residents.
Initially awarded for eight years, the franchise was extended in September 2017, set to last until November 2024. However, in April 2023, the Victorian government announced an agreement to terminate the contract earlier, with operations transitioning to Yarra Journey Makers, a joint venture between John Holland and Transdev, by December 2024.
G:link and Gold Coast Light Rail
Keolis Downer also plays a key role in the Gold Coast light rail system, known as G:link. The contract for this project was awarded in 2011 to the GoldLinq consortium, which included Keolis, as well as Bombardier Transportation, McConnell Dowell, and Plenary Group. This project underscores Keolis Downer's significant presence in the Queensland public transport sector.
Bus Services and Regional Operations
In Sydney, Keolis Downer operates bus services under the brand Keolis Northern Beaches. This includes managing the high-frequency B-Line bus route, which connects Wynyard Station in the central business district to the Northern Beaches.
Moreover, Keolis Downer expanded its footprint through the acquisition of Australian Transit Enterprises in 2015, thereby reorganizing ATE's subsidiaries to be directly controlled by Keolis Downer.
Adelaide Metro
Keolis Downer also operates part of the Adelaide Metro network, an essential component of South Australia's public transport. Since January 2021, this includes operations of seven rail lines, although recent political changes indicate a shift back to state operation under the newly-elected Labor state government.
