Yarra Trams: Melbourne's Iconic Tram Network

Yarra Trams is the trading name of the operator managing one of the most extensive tram networks in the world, located in Melbourne, Australia. The network is owned by VicTrack, a state government enterprise, and leased to Yarra Trams, which is a partnership of global transport company Transdev and infrastructure services provider, Transfield Services.

History

The privatization of Melbourne's tram system began in 1999, with Yarra Trams emerging as the successful bidder to operate the network. MetroLink Victoria Pty Ltd initially managed the operations, a joint venture that involved Transfield Services holding 50%, Transdev holding 30%, and French transport company Egis holding 20%. By 2000, Transdev had acquired Egis' share.

The Network

Melbourne's tram network is renowned for its complexity and size. As of May 2014, Yarra Trams managed approximately 487 trams across 26 tram routes, including the popular free City Circle tourist tram, and more than 1,763 tram stops. The network comprises approximately 250 km (155.3 miles) of double track, and it is recognized as the largest tram system globally.

The fleet includes a variety of tram models, such as the D-class Melbourne tram known for its low-floor design which improves accessibility. The introduction of new and modern trams has been part of Yarra Trams' ongoing commitment to upgrading the network and enhancing passenger experience.

Impact and Usage

In the fiscal year 2015/16, Melbourne's trams facilitated 203.8 million journeys, covering more than 24.8 million kilometers (15.4 million miles) annually. This highlights the immense role Yarra Trams plays in the daily lives of Melburnians as well as in the city's tourism industry.
