Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, often referred to simply as Cathay Pacific, is the flag carrier of Hong Kong. This prominent airline has its head office and principal hub at the Hong Kong International Airport.
History
Cathay Pacific was founded on September 24, 1946, by Roy C. Farrell, an American, and Sydney H. de Kantzow, an Australian. The company began its operations with passenger flights connecting Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, and Shanghai.
In 1948, Butterfield & Swire, now known as The Swire Group, acquired a 45% stake in Cathay Pacific, taking over full management responsibilities. This acquisition marked a significant turning point in the airline's development.
Expanding from its regional operations, Cathay Pacific began international services to Europe and North America in the early 1980s, facilitated by the arrival of the first Boeing 747-200 in Hong Kong in 1979. The expansion was further supported by bilateral agreements and Open Skies policies.

On April 13, 2010, Cathay Pacific Flight 780 encountered a significant in-flight emergency while traveling from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Indonesia to Hong Kong, though it landed safely.
Cathay Pacific Flight 700Z
Another noteworthy incident was Cathay Pacific Flight 700Z, a flight from Singapore to Hong Kong, which tragically ended in a crash in Pleiku.
