YG Entertainment

YG Entertainment is a prominent South Korean entertainment company, renowned for its influence in the K-pop industry and beyond. It was founded in March 1996 by Yang Hyun-suk, a former member of the legendary K-pop group Seo Taiji and Boys. Originally established under the name Hyun Planning, the company underwent a rebranding in 2001 to its current name, derived from Yang Goon, a nickname for its founder.

History and Evolution

YG Entertainment's initial foray into the music scene was with the hip-hop trio Keep Six. Despite their initial failure, which led to significant debts for Yang Hyun-suk, YG persevered and grew. The label then introduced a series of successful acts such as Perry, Masta Wu, Swi.T, Big Mama, Lexy, Gummy, and Wheesung. To diversify its musical portfolio, YG established the "YG Underground" label, housing talents like 45RPM and Stony Skunk.

Significant Artists and Releases

YG Entertainment is acclaimed for producing some of the biggest names in the K-pop industry. Artists like Big Bang, 2NE1, Blackpink, Winner, and iKon have achieved international fame. The company's discography is rich with hits, contributing significantly to the global spread of K-pop.

Blackpink

Blackpink, one of the most successful girl groups globally, debuted in 2016 and has broken numerous records. Their discography includes hits like "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" and "Kill This Love." Blackpink's EP, released in February 2026, further solidified their status as K-pop icons.

Babymonster

The girl group Babymonster is another notable addition to YG's lineup. Formed after the reality show "Last Evaluation" in 2023, Babymonster quickly gained a following with their unique style and energetic performances.

Business Ventures and Affiliates

YG Entertainment has diversified its operations beyond music production. It owns and operates various subsidiaries and affiliate companies, including YG Plus, a media and advertising company it acquired in November 2020. YG Plus handles a range of services from advertising to content distribution.

Another significant affiliate is The Black Label, founded in 2015 by YG producer Teddy Park and Kush. The Black Label has been instrumental in generating new music and fostering talent.

Industry Influence and Collaborations

YG Entertainment is one of the "Big Three" entertainment agencies in South Korea, alongside SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. The company has engaged in several collaborations and joint ventures, such as the 2010 partnership with SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and others to pool resources and expand K-pop's reach.
