History and Establishment of UDA Holdings
The Urban Development Authority of Malaysia (UDA) was founded on November 12, 1971, under the Ministry of Public Enterprise. This establishment aimed to facilitate and manage urban development across the burgeoning cityscapes of Malaysia. Over the years, UDA became a significant player in transforming urban areas and providing infrastructure to support Malaysia’s rapidly growing economy.
Initially, UDA's mission focused on developing urban communities by creating sustainable and efficient infrastructure. The organization was pivotal in several landmark projects, including the Dayabumi Complex, one of Kuala Lumpur’s early skyscrapers, which was finalized in 1984. This complex signified a landmark in Malaysia's architectural and economic advancement.
In 1995, UDA underwent a significant transformation. After 25 years of public service, it was incorporated on June 20, 1995, becoming UDA Holdings Sdn Bhd. This transition marked its evolution from a government agency to a corporate entity, allowing it to operate with greater flexibility and efficiency in the private sector. In 1999, recognizing the need for a broader public ownership structure and transparency, it became a public limited company, UDA Holdings Berhad, and was subsequently listed on the Main Board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
The turn of the millennium brought further changes. In 2007, UDA was delisted from the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional. This strategic move allowed it to refocus its objectives and realign its operations under the stewardship of Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund. A year later, the shares of UDA were transferred to the Ministry of Finance Inc., which currently oversees its operations.
Throughout its journey, UDA Holdings has not only been instrumental in urban development but also ventured into retail. It established a chain of retail outlets through its joint venture subsidiary, UDA Ocean, demonstrating its diversification into different sectors to augment its urban development portfolio.
Thus, the history of UDA Holdings is a testament to its pivotal role in Malaysia's urbanization, embodying the country's ambitions through strategic transformations and expansions in the urban development landscape.
