Ubuntu Touch
Ubuntu Touch is a mobile version of the Ubuntu operating system, initially developed by Canonical Ltd. but now maintained by the UBports community. This operating system is built with a focus on delivering a smooth, intuitive interface ideal for smartphones and tablets. The software is primarily written in Qt, a robust framework used for developing cross-platform applications.
Development and Community
The development of Ubuntu Touch began under the direction of Canonical as a part of their broader strategy to create a unified operating environment across mobile, desktop, and server devices. However, in 2017, Canonical ceased active development on Ubuntu Touch, and the project was subsequently taken over by the vibrant UBports community.
User Interface and Experience
The user interface of Ubuntu Touch is based on Lomiri, formerly known as Unity8, which was originally designed by Canonical. Lomiri emphasizes a gesture-based interaction model, eliminating the need for hardware navigation buttons and providing a more immersive experience. This design makes Ubuntu Touch intuitive, minimizing the learning curve for new users.
Multi-Device Capability
One of the unique features of Ubuntu Touch is its ability to converge. This means that when connected to an external display via a dock or cable, a device running Ubuntu Touch can provide a full desktop experience. This dual capability positions Ubuntu Touch not just as a mobile operating system but as a bridge between mobile and desktop computing.
Applications and Ecosystem
Ubuntu Touch supports a range of applications optimized for its environment. Developers can build apps using the Ubuntu SDK, which supports both native Linux applications and web apps. Ubuntu Touch aims to provide a secure, privacy-focused alternative to other mobile operating systems, adhering to the open-source principles of the broader Ubuntu ecosystem.
Devices and Installations
Numerous devices have supported or currently support Ubuntu Touch. The BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition was one of the first commercial devices to run Ubuntu Touch. More recently, UBports has expanded the range of compatible devices through the UBports Installer, allowing users to install Ubuntu Touch on a wide variety of hardware.
