Tony Abbott (born November 4, 1957, in London, England) is an Australian politician who served as the 28th Prime Minister of Australia from 2013 to 2015. A member of the Liberal Party of Australia, Abbott was a Member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1994 to 2019, representing the electorate of Warringah.
Abbott was born in London, to an Australian mother and a British father, and moved to Australia with his family when he was a child. He attended St Aloysius' College before studying economics and law at the University of Sydney. Abbott was a Rhodes Scholar at The Queen's College, Oxford, where he studied philosophy, politics, and economics.
Abbott began his political career as an adviser to Liberal Party leaders, including John Hewson. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1994. Abbott served in various ministerial positions under Prime Minister John Howard, including Minister for Employment Services, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, and Minister for Health and Ageing.
In December 2009, following a leadership spill, Abbott was elected leader of the Liberal Party, succeeding Malcolm Turnbull. Abbott led the opposition against the Australian Labor Party government and became known for his vigorous campaigning against the carbon tax.
Tony Abbott became Prime Minister of Australia after the Liberal-National Coalition won the federal election in September 2013. His government prioritized policies such as the abolition of the carbon tax, a strong stance on national security, and stopping the arrival of asylum seekers by boat through the controversial policy known as Operation Sovereign Borders.
Abbott's term as Prime Minister was marked by a focus on economic management, with an emphasis on reducing Australia's budget deficit. He faced internal party challenges, leading to a leadership spill in September 2015, where he was succeeded by Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister.
After his tenure as Prime Minister, Abbott continued to serve as a Member of Parliament until 2019. He has remained an influential figure within the Liberal Party and has been involved in various conservative causes and think tanks, including serving as an adviser to the British Board of Trade.
Tony Abbott is married to Margie Abbott, and they have three daughters. Known for his athleticism, Abbott has partaken in several Ironman Triathlons and is an active volunteer firefighter.
