History of Sultan Ismail Petra Airport

The first recorded commercial flight to Kelantan occurred on April 6, 1938, marking the beginning of the airport's operational history. This flight was conducted following a route survey by Wearne's Air Service, which foresaw the potential for an air link between Kota Bharu and other key locations.
By April 3, 1940, Wearne's Air Service had established regular scheduled flights, creating a vital connection between Kota Bharu and Singapore, with intermediary stops at Penang and Kuala Lumpur. This early development underscored the strategic importance of the airport in linking Kelantan to major trade and cultural centers in Southeast Asia.
Expansion and Renaming
In response to increasing passenger traffic and the need for a modernized facility, the Malaysian government embarked on a significant expansion project for the airport. This project commenced in September 2000 and concluded in June 2002, at a cost of approximately RM55 million. This development phase included the construction of a new terminal building, which led to the renaming of the airport in honor of Ismail Petra of Kelantan, the 28th Sultan of Kelantan who reigned from 1979 to 2010.
The new facilities were designed to accommodate the growing number of travelers and to enhance operational efficiency. The old terminal was repurposed and continues to serve as a flight training school for Asia Pacific Flight Training, reflecting the airport’s dual role in both commercial aviation and aeronautical education.
