SMRT Corporation is a prominent multi-modal public transport operator in Singapore, known primarily for its operation of bus and rail services. As a subsidiary of the Government of Singapore, SMRT plays a crucial role in the city-state’s public transportation landscape. Established in 1987, SMRT has grown to become an integral part of Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network.
SMRT Corporation was established during a period of rapid modernization in Singapore. The Mass Rapid Transit system, which began its operations in the late 1980s, was part of the government’s efforts to provide an efficient and reliable public transportation network to support the city-state’s economic growth. The corporation initially operated as a rail service provider before diversifying into bus services and other transport-related businesses.
SMRT Trains Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SMRT Corporation and the primary rail operator under its umbrella. The company manages some of the busiest lines on Singapore’s MRT network, including the North-South Line and East-West Line. Changi Airport MRT station and Marina Bay MRT station are notable stations operated by SMRT, providing pivotal connectivity for commuters and travelers alike.
SMRT Buses is another subsidiary and the second-largest bus operator in Singapore. Initially trading as Trans Island Bus Services, it was rebranded as SMRT Buses in 2004. The company operates numerous bus routes across Singapore, contributing significantly to the public transport ecosystem.
The leadership of SMRT Corporation has seen several notable figures. Saw Phaik Hwa served as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from December 2002 to January 2012. Her tenure was followed by Desmond Kuek, who held the position from 2012 to 2018. Under their leadership, SMRT underwent significant transformations, including infrastructure enhancements and service improvements.
In keeping with Singapore’s vision of a smart city, SMRT Corporation has embraced various technological innovations. These include the introduction of mobile apps for commuters, such as the MyTransport mobile app, and the implementation of electronic fare systems to streamline the commuting experience.
