Roller Family
The roller family refers to a group of birds known as the Coraciidae, which are most notably characterized by their vibrant plumage and acrobatic flight patterns. These birds are predominantly found in the Old World, extending across Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia.
Members of the roller family are medium-sized birds, often possessing strikingly colorful feathers that can range from shades of blue and green to purples and whites. The name "roller" is derived from their impressive aerial displays, which involve rolling and acrobatic maneuvers during flight. This is particularly seen during courting rituals.
The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is native to Southern and Eastern Africa. Known for its breathtaking array of colors, this bird is often sought after by photographers and bird watchers.
The European roller (Coracias garrulus) is the only roller species that breeds in Europe. Its range extends into the Maghreb, West Asia, and Central Asia.
Commonly known as the Senegal roller, the Abyssinian roller (Coracias abyssinicus) inhabits tropical Africa. It is distinguished by its bold blue and brown plumage.
The blue-bellied roller (Coracias cyanogaster) spans a habitat from Senegal to northeast Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its blue and white coloration is particularly striking against its green habitat.
The Oriental dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) is named for the distinctive pale blue or white, coin-shaped spots on its wings, resembling a dollar.
Apart from the airborne rollers, there exists a family known as the ground rollers (Brachypteraciidae). These birds are typically found in Madagascar and are known for their unique adaptation to terrestrial life.
The short-legged ground roller (Brachypteracias leptosomus) is notable for its relatively diminutive wings and its ground-dwelling habits.
The long-tailed ground roller (Uratelornis chimaera) is a particularly rare species, known for its lengthy tail and preference for the dry thorn forests of Madagascar.
Finally, the pitta-like ground roller (Atelornis pittoides) resembles the pitta birds in appearance and behavior, although it is part of the ground roller family.
