History

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company has a storied history that traces its roots back to the luxury hotels of Europe, particularly The Ritz Paris and The Carlton Hotel in London, both managed by the renowned hotelier César Ritz. These establishments set a precedent for luxury and elegance that the Ritz-Carlton would emulate and introduce to the United States.

The original Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston, operated by Edward Wyner, was pivotal in setting the standard for luxury hospitality in America. It introduced numerous innovations such as private baths in every guest room, formal uniforms for staff, fresh flowers throughout the hotel, à la carte menus, and intimate lobbies, which have become hallmarks of luxury hotels worldwide.

Current Operations

Today, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company is an American multinational corporation operating a prestigious chain of luxury hotels. The company boasts 108 luxury hotels and resorts in 30 countries, including Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean and Latin America. Additionally, 46 new properties are under development.

In 1983, the company was re-founded when the original owners sold the Ritz-Carlton brand name and the Boston hotel. Notably, The Ritz-Carlton has partnered with Bulgari since 2001 to operate a chain of hotels under the BVLGARI brand. The company also maintains marketing agreements with Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, The Ritz-Carlton Montreal, and The Ritz Hotel in London.

Awards and Recognition

The Ritz-Carlton is the only hotel company to have twice received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from the United States Department of Commerce. This award highlights the company's excellence in customer experience, which remains unmatched in the hospitality industry. The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center shares these best practices globally, establishing benchmarks for excellence across various industries.
