Port Moresby

Port Moresby

Port Moresby, commonly referred to as Pom City or simply Moresby, serves as the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. Located on the southeastern coast of the island of New Guinea, Port Moresby stands as a significant urban center in the southwestern Pacific, alongside Jayapura, outside the territories of Australia and New Zealand.

Historical Background

The site that became Port Moresby has been inhabited for centuries by the indigenous Motu-Koitabu people. The first European to document the area was Captain John Moresby, a Royal Navy officer, who arrived in 1873. The city was named in honor of his father, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Fairfax Moresby, following the exploration by the crew of HMS Basilisk. The city’s harbor was an ideal anchorage and was subsequently charted as Port Moresby.

In September 1975, Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia, marking Port Moresby as the new nation’s capital. The Prince of Wales represented the British Monarchy during the independence celebrations. Since then, Port Moresby has emerged as a hub for governmental, cultural, and intellectual activities.

Geography and Administration

Port Moresby is uniquely situated within Central Province, yet it is administratively distinct, forming the National Capital District. The city’s geographic location makes it a pivotal point for internal flights to other towns like Lae and Madang, as the national highway system is not fully integrated.

Population and Growth

As of the 2011 census, Port Moresby had a population of approximately 364,145, which surged to 756,754 by the 2024 census. This rapid growth reflects ongoing urban development and the city’s increasing importance as a regional center.

Economy

Port Moresby plays a pivotal role in the economy of Papua New Guinea. The country is rich in natural resources, which account for two-thirds of its export earnings. Despite the abundance of resources, a lack of development has historically allowed foreign entities to exploit some sites. A significant project in Port Moresby was the establishment of an oil company by foreign interests in 2004, marking it as the largest project in the nation's history.

Culture

Port Moresby is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, reflecting its diverse population and historical background. The city hosts numerous cultural events and has several institutions dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Papua New Guinean culture.
