Pasir Gudang Highway

The Pasir Gudang Highway, officially known as Federal Route 17, is a crucial arterial roadway located in the Johor Bahru District of Johor, Malaysia. It serves as a significant connection between Tampoi in the west and the industrial city of Pasir Gudang in the east. This highway plays an integral role in the transport infrastructure of the region, facilitating the movement of goods, especially by cargo trucks, between the port city and other parts of Johor.

Historical Context

Construction of the Pasir Gudang Highway began in 1977 and was completed by 1979, providing an essential link between Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang. Known for its industrial and port activities, Pasir Gudang became more accessible, fostering economic growth in the region. Initially, the highway provided a four-lane carriageway, which later, in 2012, was upgraded to a six-lane carriageway in a 15 km stretch from Tebrau to Seri Alam, as announced by Malaysia's then Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak.

Route and Connectivity

The Pasir Gudang Highway starts at Kilometre Zero in Tampoi at its interchange with the Skudai Highway, which is the main trunk road of the central part of the Peninsular Malaysia. This strategic position connects it to the broader network of Malaysian highways, including the North–South Expressway Southern Route via the Pasir Gudang Interchange. Before the construction of the Pasir Gudang Highway, roads like Jalan Tampoi and Jalan Masai Lama were the primary routes to Pasir Gudang.

Economic and Regional Impact

Pasir Gudang is a city renowned for its industrial parks, and the highway has been pivotal in supporting the logistics and transport needs of this industrial hub. The highway's existence has enabled smooth transit of raw materials and finished goods to and from the port, significantly contributing to the local and national economy.

The highway's development also laid the groundwork for further infrastructural advancements in the region, such as the Senai–Desaru Expressway and the Johor Bahru–Pasir Gudang Elevated Expressway, enhancing connectivity within the Iskandar Malaysia economic zone.

Related Projects

The completion and functioning of the Pasir Gudang Highway have inspired several other infrastructure projects in Johor. The Johor Bahru East Coast Parkway, also known as Federal Route 35, and the Iskandar Coastal Highway are parts of the expanding road network in the region, aimed at accommodating increasing traffic demands and boosting economic activities.
