Skudai Highway
The Skudai Highway is a significant roadway in Malaysia, designated as part of Federal Route 1. This highway has played a pivotal role in connecting various regions and facilitating transportation within the southern part of the country.
Historical Background
Opened to traffic in 1985, the Skudai Highway was initially constructed as an upgrade to the Federal Route 1, which is a part of the larger North–South Expressway project. This project aimed to improve connectivity across Peninsular Malaysia, enhancing economic and logistic efficiency. The highway was constructed with four lanes, two in each direction, to accommodate increasing traffic demands.
Transition to Toll-Free
Originally, the Skudai Highway was a tolled route, featuring two toll plazas located at the Senai toll plaza and the Johor Causeway toll plaza. The concession for operating these tolls was held by PLUS Expressway Berhad, a major infrastructure company in Malaysia responsible for maintaining parts of the expressway network.
In March 2004, a significant policy shift occurred when the Malaysian federal government decided to abolish the toll at the Senai plaza. This decision transferred the maintenance responsibility of the highway to the Malaysian Public Works Department, making the highway toll-free for commuters.
Infrastructure and Upgrades
The infrastructure of the Skudai Highway has undergone several upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety. Until 2008, the highway connected to the Johor–Singapore Causeway at its southern end via the former Johor Bahru CIQ Complex. With the opening of the new CIQ complex, Sultan Iskandar Building, direct access to the Causeway and Singapore is now facilitated by the Eastern Dispersal Link.
Additionally, the Tampoi North Interchange was upgraded to a Double U-Turn interchange to better manage traffic congestion. This construction began in 2005 and concluded in 2008. Furthermore, the Skudai North junctions where Route 1 intersects with Route 5 have been enhanced with trumpet interchanges, optimizing vehicle movement and safety.
Economic and Social Importance
The Skudai Highway remains a crucial artery for transportation in southern Malaysia, supporting both local and international trade, especially given its proximity to Singapore. It facilitates the movement of goods and people, bolstering economic activities and contributing to regional development.
