Paradise is elevated at approximately 1,778 feet (542 meters) above sea level, providing it with a unique vantage point over the Sacramento Valley. As of the 2020 census, Paradise had a population of 4,764, a dramatic decrease from the 26,218 recorded in the 2010 census. This decline is predominantly attributed to the devastating Camp Fire in 2018, which obliterated much of the town.

The town of Paradise was officially incorporated in 1979. It grew rapidly in the late 20th century due to its appeal as a retirement community and its proximity to natural attractions such as Lake Oroville and the Sierra Nevada mountains. The catastrophe resulted in a population plummet of over 90%, with only 2,034 residents found in a door-to-door count by April 2019.
