The Sacramento Valley is an expansive geographic region located in the northern portion of the Central Valley of the U.S. state of California. It stretches northward from the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta to the meeting point of various mountain ranges, including the Northern Coast Ranges, the southern Siskiyou Mountains, and the northern Sierra Nevada.
Geography and Environment
The Sacramento River, the longest river in California, flows through the valley, defining its rich alluvial plains. The valley's location between the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada provides it with a fertile landscape, historically abundant with forests prior to extensive settlement and agricultural development. Much wetter winters in the surrounding foothills, with precipitation averaging between 25-60 inches annually, support a diverse ecosystem and robust agricultural output.
