Operation Sovereign Borders

Operation Sovereign Borders (OSB) is a border protection initiative led by the Australian Border Force, established with the primary aim of preventing maritime arrivals of asylum seekers to Australia. Launched in September 2013 under the government of then Prime Minister Tony Abbott, OSB has been a focal point of Australia’s immigration policy.

Background and Implementation

The operation was introduced as a response to increasing numbers of asylum seekers arriving in Australia by boat, many of whom were attempting dangerous sea voyages from various points in the Asia-Pacific region. The Australian government, concerned about both the safety of the individuals involved and the integrity of its borders, developed OSB as a comprehensive strategy that included military and civilian elements.

Under the leadership of General Angus Campbell, who was appointed Commander of OSB at its inception, the operation employs a Joint Agency Taskforce model. This taskforce integrates the efforts of multiple government agencies, including the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Border Force, and the Australian Defence Force.

A critical component of OSB is the deployment of naval resources to intercept and deter asylum seeker vessels. The Royal Australian Navy and other maritime assets, such as the Armidale-class patrol boats, play a vital role in these operations, which are part of the broader Operation Resolute.

Facilities on Nauru and Manus Island, part of the Pacific Solution, are used to detain and process asylum seekers intercepted at sea.
