Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a prominent wildlife sanctuary located in Laikipia County, Kenya. Spanning approximately 360 square kilometers (140 square miles), it is one of the largest conservancies in East Africa and features a diverse array of wildlife, including some of the world's most endangered species.

Geography and Location

Situated on the equator, Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies at the foot of Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. The conservancy's landscape comprises vast plains, acacia-dotted savannahs, and riverine forests, providing a rich habitat for numerous animal species.

Wildlife and Conservation Efforts

The conservancy is renowned for its efforts in wildlife conservation, particularly for its role in protecting the critically endangered Northern White Rhinoceros. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the last two remaining northern white rhinoceroses, Najin and Fatu, who live under 24-hour armed guard protection to prevent poaching.

In addition to rhinoceroses, Ol Pejeta supports a wide variety of species, including chimpanzees, which can be observed at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This sanctuary provides a haven for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees, offering visitors a chance to learn about their care and conservation.

History

Originally a cattle ranch, the land was transformed into a wildlife conservancy through the efforts of conservationists and support from local and international entities. The land was once owned by Adnan Khashoggi, a Saudi businessman who played a significant role in its development.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy actively involves and supports surrounding communities. By ensuring that conservation efforts benefit local people, the conservancy invests in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, aiming to improve the quality of life and foster a generation of dedicated wildlife guardians.
