Norway Lemming

The Norway lemming, also known as the Norwegian lemming, is a fascinating rodent species scientifically categorized as Lemmus lemmus. It is endemic to the northern regions of Fennoscandia, which includes countries such as Norway, Sweden, and parts of Finland. This species is a part of the subfamily Arvicolinae, which includes other small rodents like voles and muskrats.

Physical Description

The mainland Norway lemming is easily recognizable by its striking coloration featuring a bold pattern of black and yellow-brown fur. This coloration can vary significantly between individuals, allowing for some identification variance within populations. In contrast, a subspecies potentially found on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago exhibits a more cryptic gray coloration, which had initially led scientists to misidentify it as the Siberian brown lemming.

Habitat and Distribution

The Norway lemming is primarily found across the open tundras and mountainous landscapes of its native range. Its distribution extends from the western parts of Norway to the eastern Kola Peninsula. A study in 2021 proposed that the lemmings on Novaya Zemlya might also belong to this species, which could potentially stretch its range further eastward. However, these findings are still under scientific review and have not been universally accepted.

Behavior and Ecology

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Norway lemming is its dramatic population cycle, which spans approximately three to four years. During peak phases of this cycle, lemming populations can explode to unsustainable numbers, leading to high mortality rates. This boom-and-bust cycle is crucial to the ecosystem as it influences predator populations and vegetation dynamics.

Related Species and Taxonomy

The Norway lemming is closely related to other members of the genus Lemmus, such as the Amur lemming and the Beringian lemming. Additionally, it is part of the broader tribe Lemmini, which encompasses various true lemming species. The Steppe lemming and Northern collared lemming are other examples of lemming species within the Arvicolinae subfamily.
