Purpose and Mission of the Nigerian University Games Association
The Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) is a prestigious organization with a unique and multifaceted mission, deeply embedded within the educational and athletic frameworks of Nigeria. Established in 1965 following the inaugural West African University Games held at the University of Ibadan, NUGA orchestrates inter-university sports competitions that bring together student-athletes from across Nigeria.
Purpose
The core purpose of NUGA is to integrate sports into the educational experience of Nigerian university students. By organizing and facilitating sports competitions, NUGA aims to enhance the physical, mental, and social aspects of development among students. Participation in these events provides students with an opportunity to hone their athletic skills, engage in healthy competition, and foster camaraderie across diverse university communities.
Mission
The mission of NUGA aligns with the motto of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), "Excellence in Mind and Body." NUGA's mission is articulated through the following objectives:
-
Promotion of Excellence: NUGA seeks to cultivate a culture of excellence among student-athletes by encouraging not only physical prowess but also intellectual growth. This dual focus ensures that participants strive for greatness both on the field and in their academic pursuits.
-
Development Through Sports: By incorporating sports into the university curriculum, NUGA promotes the holistic development of students. This encompasses physical fitness, mental resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills, thereby preparing students for future challenges.
-
Fostering Unity and Peace: Through its competitions, NUGA fosters a spirit of unity and peace among Nigerian universities. By bringing together diverse cultures and communities, the association creates avenues for mutual understanding and cooperation.
-
Organizing Competitions: NUGA is responsible for organizing the biennial Nigerian University Games, which feature a range of 18 sports events including athletics, football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, tennis, and chess. These competitions offer students the platform to showcase their talents on a national stage.
-
Hosting Seminars and Forums: In addition to sports events, NUGA hosts seminars and forums aimed at discussing and advancing sports development in Nigeria. These gatherings serve as platforms for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and addressing challenges faced by the sports community.
Since its inception, NUGA has seen participation from over 80 universities, both private and public, involving more than 75,000 athletes. These events provide invaluable experiences and contribute significantly to the sports culture within Nigerian higher education institutions.
