Obafemi Awolowo University
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), formerly known as the University of Ife, is a prominent federal university located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. Established in 1961, it began academic activities in October 1962 under the name University of Ife. The institution was initially founded by the regional government of Western Nigeria, which at the time was led by Samuel Ladoke Akintola.
Renaming and Legacy
The university was renamed "Obafemi Awolowo University" on May 12, 1987, commemorating Obafemi Awolowo, a revered Nigerian politician and statesman who served as the first Premier of the Western Region. Awolowo was instrumental in conceptualizing the establishment of the university. Later, in 1975, the university's status was changed to a federal university through decrees enacted by a new military government in Nigeria.
Academic and Social Life
Obafemi Awolowo University is known for its vibrant students' union, commonly referred to as the "Great Ife Students' Union." The university has been a cradle of cultural and social activities, including the formation of the Kegite Club in 1962, a prominent social and cultural student society that has since expanded beyond the university.
The Obafemi Awolowo University Massacre
On July 10, 1999, the university experienced a tragic event known as the Obafemi Awolowo University massacre. Members of the Black Axe Confraternity, a cult group in Nigeria, murdered George Iwilade, the Secretary-General of the students' union, along with several other student activists. This event highlighted the challenges of confraternities in Nigeria and their impact on campus safety.
Healthcare and Medical Education
The university is affiliated with the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, a tertiary healthcare facility established in 1967. This teaching hospital plays a crucial role in medical education and healthcare training for students and professionals in the region.
