Historical Background
The IRT Flushing Line itself is a product of the Dual Contracts, a pivotal agreement in the history of New York City transit. Initially, the BMT began operating shuttle services along this line, terminating at Queensboro Plaza, before the line was extended.
In 1921, an extension of the Flushing Line beyond 103rd Street was approved, including the construction of stations at Main Street, Willets Point Boulevard, and 111th Street. The station at Willets Point, known today as Mets–Willets Point, served as a temporary terminal point until the Main Street station was completed. During this period, passengers had to switch to shuttle buses to cross the creek to Flushing.
Station Features
The Mets–Willets Point station is served by the 7 train at all times and the express <7> train during rush hours or after sporting events. The station's strategic location near Citi Field makes it exceptionally busy on days when the Mets play home games or when events are held at the nearby USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
A key aspect of the station is its accessibility to both the subway system and the Long Island Rail Road through the Mets–Willets Point station on the Port Washington Branch, making it a convenient junction for commuters and event-goers.
