The Lo Wu Bridge is a significant infrastructure connecting Hong Kong and Shenzhen, traversing the Sham Chun River. It serves as both a footbridge and a steel railway truss bridge, integral to the movement of people and goods between the two regions.

Historical Significance

The original railway bridge at Lo Wu has a rich history, particularly related to its importance as a border crossing point. The bridge was originally part of the Kowloon-Canton Railway and played a pivotal role in trade and transportation between Hong Kong and mainland China. Historically, it was one of the few crossing points during periods of heightened political tensions, symbolizing both connection and division.

In September 2003, to accommodate the widening of the Shenzhen River at Lo Wu, the old railway bridge was relocated downstream. This operation was conducted with great care to preserve its historical value, and the bridge was subsequently preserved as a monumental landmark on the bank of the Sham Chun River near the Lo Wu Station.

Modern Structure

The current Lo Wu Bridge includes an enclosed two-story pedestrian walkway that replaced earlier structures—a partially covered walkway constructed in 1985 and an older truss bridge. This design allows pedestrians to cross the border without having to traverse the railway tracks, enhancing both safety and transit efficiency.
