The People's Republic of China (PRC) is a sovereign state located in East Asia, occupying the vast majority of the Chinese mainland. Officially founded on October 1, 1949, by Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the PRC emerged from a complex backdrop of civil war and international conflict.

Geography and Demographics
