Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit
The Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) is an ambitious infrastructure project aimed at enhancing public transportation in the Klang Valley, which includes the bustling urban area of Greater Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and increase the usage of public transportation within the region.
The proposal for the KVMRT was first announced in June 2010 by then Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak as part of the 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015). The project drew inspiration from Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, intending to replicate its efficiency and extensive coverage.
The KVMRT is identified as one of the key economic entry point projects under the Economic Transformation Programme for the Klang Valley "National Key Economic Area." The goal is to significantly boost rail ridership as a part of the government's target to increase public transport usage in the Klang Valley from 18% in 2009 to 40% by 2020.
The KVMRT system comprises three main lines:
MRT Kajang Line: This is the second fully automated, driverless rail system introduced in the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System, and it services high-density areas. It extends in a southeast-northwest direction, covering a 20 km radius from the city center.
MRT Putrajaya Line: Designed to further integrate with existing transit systems in Kuala Lumpur, this line aims to cover additional areas that are currently underserved by public transportation.
MRT Circle Line: A proposed loop around Kuala Lumpur, the circle line is expected to enhance connectivity by linking key urban points and facilitating easier movement across the city.
In October 2011, the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) was established to oversee the implementation and ownership of the KVMRT project. MRT Corp took over responsibility from Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, which had initially been in charge. MRT Corp operates as a dedicated unit focusing solely on realizing the MRT project within Klang Valley.
The KVMRT is part of the larger Klang Valley Integrated Transit System, which includes various modes of transportation such as Rapid KL and other rail transit services. By connecting with existing lines, the KVMRT intends to offer a seamless and efficient network for commuters across the urban agglomeration.
By improving public transportation infrastructure, the KVMRT is expected to have a profound impact on the economy and social landscape of the Klang Valley. Enhanced mobility can lead to an increase in economic activities, reduced travel time, and improved quality of life for residents. The project is also anticipated to drive urban development and investment in surrounding areas.
