Kc Tenants A Movement For Housing Justice
KC Tenants is a politically left-wing non-profit tenant's union based in Kansas City, Missouri. Founded in 2019 by Tiana Caldwell, Tara Raghuveer, and Brandy, the organization is dedicated to advocating for the rights of tenants and ensuring fair housing practices.
KC Tenants emerged as a response to the growing concerns over housing insecurity and the rights of renters in Kansas City. Its mission revolves around fighting for safe, accessible, and affordable housing for all residents. The union operates under the principle that housing is a human right and seeks to empower tenants by providing them resources and a collective voice.
In collaboration with Kansas City's Mayor Quinton Lucas, KC Tenants was instrumental in passing a Tenant's Bill of Rights in 2019. This legislation included provisions that banned discrimination against prospective tenants based on prior arrests, convictions, or evictions. This landmark policy was a significant step forward in protecting tenant rights.
Furthering its advocacy, the organization pushed for the adoption of a tenant right to counsel policy. This policy provides free legal representation to renters facing eviction, ensuring that they have the necessary support to navigate the legal system and defend their rights.
In January 2024, the Kansas City City Council enacted a ban on source of income discrimination, a measure strongly advocated by KC Tenants. This policy prevents landlords from discriminating against tenants based on their source of income, such as housing vouchers, thereby expanding access to housing opportunities for low-income families.
Throughout its existence, KC Tenants has actively clashed with landlords and the courts over eviction cases, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic eviction moratorium. The organization has been at the forefront of rent strikes, such as those announced on September 27, 2024, at Independence Towers and Quality Hill Towers. These strikes demanded collectively bargained lease agreements, new ownership of apartment complexes, and a federal rent cap.
KC Tenants is part of a larger national movement advocating for tenant rights and housing justice. It shares common objectives with other tenant unions such as the Louisville Tenants Union in Kentucky and Bozeman Tenants United in Montana. These organizations collectively contribute to the Tenant Union Federation, working towards systemic change on a broader scale.
