Progressive International

Progressive International (PI) is a left-wing political international organization that unites various progressive movements worldwide. It was established to counter rising nationalism and authoritarianism with a collaborative and global response. PI includes over 70 member groups, which consist of trade unions, political parties, and peasant organizations.

Founding and Purpose

The concept of a Progressive International was first proposed by Yanis Varoufakis, a former Greek Finance Minister, and supported by the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) and the Sanders Institute, an organization founded by Jane O'Meara Sanders. The initiative aims to unite progressive forces globally to address issues such as inequality, climate change, and threats to democracy.

Activities and Campaigns

PI organizes various campaigns and events to promote its causes. These include the annual Panamerican Congress, which brings together activists, intellectuals, and political leaders to discuss strategies for collective action. The organization leverages digital platforms for global campaigns and to connect local struggles into a broader international context.

Notable Members and Affiliations

PI comprises a diverse membership, including political leaders, academics, and activists. Among its prominent figures is David R. K. Adler, who serves as a co-general coordinator. The organization collaborates with a range of progressive entities, from socialist to environmental movements.

Comparisons and Relations

Progressive International is often compared to other similar international movements, such as the Progressive Alliance and the Socialist International. However, while these organizations focus on social democracy and socialism, PI emphasizes a broader coalition that includes grassroots and activist groups.
