Johor State
Johor is a prominent state located in the southern region of the Malay Peninsula, Malaysia. It is bordered by Pahang, Malacca, and Negeri Sembilan to the north, with the Strait of Johor separating it from Singapore to the south. This strategic positioning has made Johor an essential economic and cultural hub in the region.
The Johor Sultanate, known also as the Johor Empire or Johor-Pahang-Riau-Lingga, was established in the early 16th century by Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II following the fall of the Malacca Sultanate. This sultanate played a pivotal role in regional politics, commerce, and culture, influencing areas as far as the Riau Archipelago and Pahang.
Johor’s history is intricately linked with other Malay sultanates, such as the Riau-Lingga Sultanate and the Aceh Sultanate. Notably, the Johor Sultanate engaged in a series of conflicts known as the Johor–Jambi wars due to geopolitical tensions and power struggles.
The modern state of Johor emerged from the remnants of the sultanate, with its current governmental and administrative structures evolving over time. The Sultan of Johor remains a significant cultural figurehead, maintaining traditions and historical continuity.
Johor is a major economic powerhouse in Malaysia, due to its proximity to Singapore and its substantial industrial base. It is a key player in Iskandar Malaysia, a development corridor aimed at accelerating economic growth. The Forest City project is an example of modern urban development in the state, designed to enhance tourism and international commerce.
Johor boasts a well-developed transport infrastructure, including the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System and the Johor–Singapore Causeway, which facilitate easy movement between Malaysia and Singapore. The Senai International Airport serves as a vital aviation hub for the region.
The capital city, Johor Bahru, is the heart of the state’s commercial and cultural activities. As the core city of the Johor Bahru District, it is the second-largest district in Malaysia by population. Johor Bahru Sentral station and Johor Bahru City Square are notable landmarks that highlight the city's economic vitality.
Johor Bahru is also home to Johor Darul Ta'zim F.C., a professional football club that competes in the Malaysia Super League, reflecting the city’s vibrant sports culture.
