Malaysia
Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country situated on the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo. It comprises thirteen states and three federal territories and is divided into two geographical regions: Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. Malaysia shares land borders with Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei, and maritime borders with Vietnam and the Philippines.
History of Malaysia
The modern concept of Malaysia was established in the latter half of the 20th century. The history of the region, however, dates back thousands of years, with significant historical influences from Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism due to its strategic location as a hub for trade between the East and West. In 1963, the Federation of Malaysia was formed, amalgamating Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah, and briefly Singapore. Malaysia's formation marked a new chapter, fostering economic growth and socio-political stability.
Geography of Malaysia
Malaysia's geography is characterized by its two distinct regions separated by the South China Sea. Peninsular Malaysia is bordered by Thailand and is known for its mountain ranges and coastal plains. In contrast, East Malaysia on Borneo is more rugged with dense rainforests, home to diverse flora and fauna including the endangered Bornean orangutan. The nation boasts several World Heritage Sites such as the Kinabalu Park and the Gunung Mulu National Park.
Economy of Malaysia
Malaysia has a high-income, newly industrialized economy, ranking as the 35th largest in the world. It is characterized by its openness and state orientation, with key sectors including electronics, automotive, and oil and gas. The Malaysian ringgit serves as the official currency. Historically, Malaysia was known for its natural resources, particularly tin and rubber, but today its economy is more diversified, with strong growth in manufacturing and services.
Culture of Malaysia
The culture of Malaysia is a vibrant tapestry woven from diverse influences including Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous peoples. The national language is Malay, and Islam is the official religion. However, the country is known for its religious tolerance and multicultural festivals, such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali. Malaysia's cuisine reflects its multicultural heritage, famous for dishes like nasi lemak and satay.
Government and Politics
Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy, with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong serving as the ceremonial head of state. The government operates as a parliamentary democracy, with the Prime Minister of Malaysia as the head of government. The political landscape has been historically dominated by the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), although recent years have seen increased political competition.
