Interstate 290 Illinois
Interstate 290 (I-290) is a significant auxiliary Interstate Highway in the state of Illinois. The highway, also known as the Eisenhower Expressway for a large portion of its route, plays a crucial role in connecting the western suburbs of Chicago to the city's urban core.
Interstate 290 runs from the Jane Byrne Interchange, located near the Chicago Loop, to its terminus at Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 (John F. Kennedy Expressway/Dan Ryan Expressway) near the Loop. The highway continues west to connect with Interstate 90, known locally as the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, in Rolling Meadows.
North of its interchange with Interstate 355, the highway is sometimes referred to as Illinois Route 53, or simply Route 53, due to historical naming conventions before the establishment of I-290.
The Eisenhower Expressway, which I-290 is part of, was originally marked as a component of I-90 until 1977. It was in 1978 that the Interstate 90 designation was rerouted over the Kennedy Expressway and the Northwest Tollway, replacing Illinois Route 194. Consequently, the expressway was renumbered as I-290, and signage was updated in 1979.
As of 2020, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority initiated a significant construction effort, estimated at a cost of $700–$800 million, to address operational issues at the I-290/I-88 interchange at Interstate 294. This construction is part of the Illinois Tollway's Central Tri-State Project, highlighting I-290's continued importance in the regional transportation network.
Interstate 290 is a critical artery for both commuter and freight traffic. It serves as a primary route for residents commuting daily to the city of Chicago and is a vital link in the transport of goods to and from the city. The highway features multiple interchanges and exits that facilitate access to various suburbs and neighborhoods in its vicinity.
The development and maintenance of Interstate 290 demonstrate its indispensable role in the broader transportation infrastructure of Illinois, linking key urban and suburban areas while supporting significant economic activities.
