Interstate 88 in Illinois
Interstate 88 (I-88) is a significant route within the Interstate Highway System located in the U.S. state of Illinois. This highway plays a crucial role in connecting major industrial and urban centers.
Route Description
I-88 begins at an interchange with Interstate 80 near the cities of Silvis and Moline and extends eastward to an interchange with Interstate 290 near Hillside. It serves as a vital link between the cities of the Quad Cities area and the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
The origins of I-88 trace back to the efforts of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA), who petitioned the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in 1987 to redesignate the existing Illinois Route 5 as an Interstate. This request was approved, and the highway was assigned the I-88 designation.
Features
One notable feature along I-88 is the DeKalb oasis, a service area constructed in 1975, prior to the highway's designation as an interstate. Due to its construction date, it remains operational despite federal laws that generally prohibit commercial rest areas on Interstates constructed after 1960.
I-88 is also significant due to its technical designation under the old National Maximum Speed Law, which played a role in its original and continued existence.
Connectivity and Infrastructure
Interstate 88 intersects with several other major routes including:
- Interstate 39, providing north-south connectivity through Illinois and into Wisconsin.
- Interstate 294, a tolled auxiliary route in northeastern Illinois.
- Interstate 90, which runs through the northern part of the state.
These connections facilitate the movement of goods and people across the Midwest, contributing to the economic vitality of the region.
Economic and Regional Impact
The presence of I-88 enhances the economic development of the surrounding areas by improving access to the Chicago metropolitan area, one of the largest urban economies in the United States. It supports industries ranging from manufacturing to agriculture, highlighting its importance in the Midwestern United States transportation network.
