Moline, Illinois
Moline is a city located in Rock Island County, Illinois, United States, and is one of the key cities within the Quad Cities region, which comprises Davenport and Bettendorf in southeastern Iowa, and Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline in northwestern Illinois. As of the 2020 census, Moline had a population of 42,985, making it the largest city within Rock Island County.
History
Moline's origins date back to the early 19th century when it was established as a factory town in 1843. Initially referred to as "Rock Island Mills," the city was eventually named Moline, derived from the French word moulin, meaning "mill town." This was a reflection of its early economic foundation, largely centered around milling and other manufacturing industries.
Economy and Industry
Moline is renowned for being the home to the global headquarters of Deere & Company, one of the largest and oldest agricultural and construction equipment manufacturers in the world. Additionally, the city is the location of the U.S. headquarters of Kone, an elevator company that acquired Montgomery Elevator, originally based in Moline.
The city also plays a pivotal role as a retail hub for the Illinois Quad Cities, housing major shopping destinations like the South Park Mall and numerous big-box shopping plazas.
Education and Culture
