Ilam Province

Ilam Province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran, located in the western part of the country. Its capital is the city of Ilam, which also serves as the capital of Ilam County.

Geography and Borders

Ilam Province is strategically positioned, sharing a 425 km (264 mi) border with Iraq. It is also bordered by the Iranian provinces of Kermanshah, Lorestan, and Khuzestan. This location has made Ilam a significant province in terms of both cultural and economic exchanges.

Historical Background

The name "Ilam" is derived from "Elam," the prehistoric civilization that ruled the area in modern southwest Iran from 2700 BC to 539 BC. The original inhabitants of Ilam were the Guitians and the Kassites. With the arrival of the Aryans in Iran, the Medes settled in the Zagros region. This county was formerly a district within Chardavol County. Similarly, Chavar District was separated from Ilam County and elevated to county status.
