Gelang Patah
Gelang Patah is a significant town located in Iskandar Puteri, within the Johor Bahru District of Johor, Malaysia. It has traditionally been a part of the political landscape controlled by the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional. The town is now a key component of the rapidly developing region known as Iskandar Malaysia, which is a major economic zone in southern Malaysia.
Gelang Patah was once a federal constituency represented in the Dewan Rakyat from 1995 until 2018. It was eventually renamed the Iskandar Puteri constituency. One notable political figure associated with Gelang Patah was Tan Ah Eng, who served as a Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2013. The area continued to be a focus of political activity, especially during election periods.
The strategic location of Gelang Patah has bolstered its role in Malaysia’s economic development. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas, situated on the eastern mouth of the Pulai River, is one of the busiest ports in the region. This port is notable for its proximity to the Straits of Johor, which separates Malaysia from Singapore. This geographical advantage has turned Gelang Patah into a vital logistical hub that supports international trade and commerce.
One of the major infrastructure projects in Gelang Patah includes the Kota Iskandar Highway, which connects the town to the administrative center of Kota Iskandar. This highway is crucial for enhancing connectivity within Iskandar Puteri, facilitating the movement of people and goods across the region. The Malaysia–Singapore Second Link, another significant infrastructure, connects Gelang Patah to Tuas in Singapore, further emphasizing its role as a transnational corridor.
The development of Gelang Patah is closely tied to the broader strategic plans of Iskandar Malaysia. This includes various initiatives to transform the region into a sustainable metropolis that balances economic growth with quality of life improvements. The strategic location of Gelang Patah makes it central to these ambitions, serving as a gateway to both domestic and international opportunities.
