Federal Highway in Malaysia
The Federal Highway in Malaysia, known in Malay as "Lebuhraya Persekutuan," is a significant part of the country's transportation infrastructure. This highway is coded as Federal Route 2, serving as a primary east-west route that connects Port Klang in Selangor to Kuantan in Pahang. It is an integral component of the Malaysian Federal Roads System, which serves as the main national road network in Malaysia.
Historical Background
The history of the Federal Highway begins after the separation of Singapore from Malaysia on August 9, 1965. Following this event, the Malaysian government decided to establish Port Swettenham, now known as Port Klang, as Malaysia's new national port. This move was intended to replace Singapore as the primary port for Malaysia. Consequently, the Federal Highway emerged as a critical link between the port and major cities in the country, facilitating trade and transportation.
Development and Upgrades
The Kuala Lumpur–Petaling Jaya Traffic Dispersal Scheme, implemented in 1974, was a major development under the Malaysian Public Works Department. This scheme included the construction of the Kuala Lumpur Inner Ring Road, Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 1, and Jalan Syed Putra, alongside the Federal Highway Route 2. These roads were designed to improve traffic flow in and around Kuala Lumpur, easing congestion in the rapidly growing metropolitan area.
In 2005, significant upgrades were undertaken to improve connectivity and traffic management on the Federal Highway. The Subang Airport Interchange, which includes the main link from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport Highway to Persiaran Kewajipan near Menara Mesiniaga, was upgraded. This project was also led by the Malaysian Public Works Department, reflecting continued efforts to enhance the highway's capacity and efficiency.
Route and Significance
The Federal Highway is renowned for its controlled-access design, which facilitates a smooth and efficient flow of traffic. As a major route, it is critical for both local commuting and long-distance travel, connecting urban centers and supporting economic activities. The highway not only serves as a crucial link between the port and inland regions but also contributes to the overall development and integration of Malaysia's road network.
