Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport
Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, also known as Subang SkyPark, is a significant aviation hub located in Selangor, Malaysia. Originally named Subang International Airport, it was the primary airport for Kuala Lumpur from its opening in 1965 until 1998 when most international air traffic was transferred to the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
History
The construction of the airport began in 1961 and concluded in 1965, with a total expenditure of approximately RM52 million, which was then equivalent to around $64 million. This airport was a central aviation hub in Malaysia and played a pivotal role in the country's aviation sector until the late 1990s. In 1996, it was renamed after Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj, the then Sultan of Selangor and the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Infrastructure and Operations
Today, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport serves as a hub for various regional and charter carriers, including Batik Air Malaysia, Firefly, Berjaya Air, MHS Aviation, and Weststar Aviation. Its strategic location near Kuala Lumpur continues to attract travelers due to its proximity to the city center and convenient access to the Klang Valley.
As of 2024, the airport has re-introduced commercial jet operations, connecting Subang to several regional destinations. Additionally, it is actively developing its capacity as a leading center for aircraft Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services and other aerospace activities in the region.
Transportation Links
The airport is well-connected through various transportation means, with the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport Highway, also known as Federal Route 15, serving as a major highway linking the airport to the surrounding areas in Selangor. This facilitates easy access for passengers and cargo, bolstering its status as an essential part of Malaysia's aviation infrastructure.
Notable Incidents
One of the notable incidents associated with the airport is the 2023 Elmina Beechcraft 390 crash, where an aircraft traveling from Langkawi International Airport to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport crashed shortly before landing. Such incidents underscore the importance of stringent safety measures in aviation.
