Europe
Europe is a continent located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere. It is bounded by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and Asia to the east. Europe shares the landmass of Eurasia, and together with Africa, it forms part of the greater landmass of Afro-Eurasia.
Covering an area of approximately 10,186,000 square kilometers (3,933,000 sq mi), Europe constitutes about 2% of Earth's surface and 6.8% of Earth's land area, making it the second smallest continent according to the seven-continent model. Despite its size, Europe is densely populated with about 745 million people as of 2021, constituting about 10% of the world's population.
Europe's diverse climate is primarily influenced by warm Atlantic currents, such as the Gulf Stream, which moderate the climate by tempering the winters and summers in much of the continent. This results in varied environments, from the Mediterranean climate in the south to subarctic conditions in the far north.
Politically, Europe is subdivided into approximately fifty sovereign states, with Russia being the largest by area and the most populous. Russia accounts for 39% of Europe's landmass and 15% of its population. The European Union (EU), a political and economic union of 27 member states, is a prominent feature of the European political scene, facilitating economic cooperation and integration among its members.
The history of Europe is often divided into distinctive periods: prehistoric Europe, classical antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the modern era. Each era has contributed significantly to the development of European culture and identity, influencing global history and civilization.
Europe has been a cradle of Western civilization, with its cultural legacy encompassing arts, philosophy, and sciences. The continent has been home to numerous influential figures including Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Marie Curie, and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Europe's economy is highly diverse and developed, with the EU playing a central role in economic policy across the continent. The EU operates a single market allowing for the free movement of goods, services, capital, and labor. Key economic sectors include manufacturing, finance, and technology, with significant contributions from countries such as Germany, France, and Italy.
