History

The area that is now Davenport was initially part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1805, the explorer Zebulon Pike camped on what would become the city’s site. The Black Hawk War of 1832 marked a significant turning point, leading to the Black Hawk Purchase or Scott's Purchase, in which the United States acquired lands in eastern Iowa.

[Davenport was founded on May 14, 1836, by settlers inspired by Colonel George Davenport, who served at Fort Armstrong during the war. The city was officially incorporated on January 25, 1839. Over time, governance transitioned through various territorial administrations, including the Michigan Territory, Wisconsin Territory, and Iowa Territory, eventually becoming part of the state of Iowa.

As of the 2020 census, Davenport had a population of 101,724 residents, making it one of the largest cities in Iowa. It hosts the third-largest African American community in the state, with a rich history dating back to the Civil War.
