Barisan Nasional
Barisan Nasional (BN), meaning "National Front" in English, is a political coalition in Malaysia. Established in 1974, it primarily represents centre-right and right-wing political ideologies. It was formed as a successor to the Alliance Party, a coalition that had been in power since Malaysia's independence in 1957.
The BN coalition was initially composed of several major political parties in Malaysia, including the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), and the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). Over the years, it expanded to include other parties, reflecting Malaysia's multi-ethnic composition. This coalition was pivotal in maintaining political stability and fostering economic growth in the country for several decades.
Barisan Nasional dominated Malaysian politics for over four decades, holding a majority in the Dewan Rakyat, Malaysia's lower house of Parliament. The coalition's influence was so pervasive that it effectively centralized power within the federal government, often leading to criticisms of over-centralization and lack of state autonomy.
During its tenure, BN oversaw significant economic transformations in Malaysia, contributing to the country's development into a newly industrialized economy. However, its long-standing power was also marred by allegations of corruption, gerrymandering, and suppression of dissent.
The coalition's political dominance was notably challenged during the 2008 general elections when it lost its two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat for the first time. This was further exacerbated in the 2013 general elections, where the opposition coalition received more popular votes, although BN managed to retain power. The turning point came in the 2018 general elections when BN lost power to the opposition coalition, Pakatan Harapan, marking the first time it was out of power since its inception.
In response to these challenges, BN has undergone restructuring and realignment of its political strategies. The coalition has continued to play a crucial role in Malaysian politics, particularly in forming alliances with other political entities like Perikatan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak.
Many significant Malaysian political figures have been affiliated with BN, including Anwar Ibrahim, who was once a prominent leader within the coalition before his association with the opposition. Other notable leaders include various Prime Ministers of Malaysia who have been instrumental in shaping the country's political landscape.
