Barcelona Metro Line 3

Barcelona Metro Line 3

Barcelona Metro Line 3, colloquially known as the Línia verda or "Green Line," is a significant component of the Barcelona Metro system, operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). This line forms an integral part of the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) fare-integrated transport network serving the Barcelona metropolitan area.

Historical Development

Line 3 is the oldest line in the Barcelona Metro network, having been inaugurated in 1924 under the name Gran Metro de Barcelona. Its initial purpose was to facilitate transportation for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, connecting Plaça Lesseps with Plaça Catalunya. Plaça Catalunya thus became a central hub for underground transportation in the city.

Mergers and Extensions

Originally, Line 3 was composed of two separate segments, L3 and L3B. These were merged in 1982 to form the V-shaped line seen today. Over the years, Line 3 has undergone numerous extensions and renovations, enhancing its reach and capacity. Presently, it spans from Zona Universitària, situated near the University of Barcelona campus in the Les Corts district, to Trinitat Nova in Nou Barris.

Route and Stations

The entirety of Line 3 runs underground, containing some of the city's oldest metro stations. Key stops along the route include the following:

  • Plaça Catalunya Station: A major intersection point for various transportation lines, including metro lines L1 and L6, as well as Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya services.

  • Diagonal Station: Provides connections to lines L5 and L6.

  • Passeig de Gràcia: Another strategic station linking to both metro and national railway services.

There are ongoing plans to expand Line 3 further from Trinitat Nova to Trinitat Vella, facilitating a connection with Line 1, and potentially extending from Zona Universitària into the Baix Llobregat region to serve its suburban communities.
