Barcelona Metro Line 4

Barcelona Metro Line 4, often referred to as "Línia Groga" (Yellow line), is a crucial element of the Barcelona Metro network. This rapid transit line is operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and integrates seamlessly into the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità fare system. Line 4 plays an essential role in connecting various neighborhoods within Barcelona, facilitating efficient transportation for both locals and tourists.

Historical Development

The origins of Line 4 can be traced back to the Gran Metro network, with its original stations, Urquinaona and Jaume I, opening in 1926. The line underwent its first expansion in 1974, extending from Joanic to Guinardó. Further expansions followed, reaching Barceloneta in 1976 and Selva de Mar in 1977. In 1982, the line stretched from Guinardó to Via Júlia and from Selva de Mar to La Pau, marking a significant phase in its development.

In 1982, as part of a comprehensive reorganization of the Barcelona Metro, Line IV was renamed Line 4, aligning it with the new planning strategies for the city's metro network. At this point, several stations underwent name changes to better reflect their locations and services.

Temporary Extensions and Future Plans

In 1985, a temporary extension from La Pau to Pep Ventura was incorporated into Line 4. Originally intended for Line 5, these plans were altered by the 1984 Barcelona Metro plan, which reassigned the route to Line 2. However, as Line 2 was not yet complete, Line 4 provisionally serviced this extension.

Considerations for extending Line 4 to the distant Nou Barris neighborhoods in the Collserola hills led to the introduction of a new light metro, Line 11, as a more suitable alternative. In 2003, the El Maresme-Fòrum station was added as an infill station to cater to the El Besòs i el Maresme neighborhood, ahead of the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures.

Future expansion plans for Line 4 are linked with the development of Line 9 and Line 10 projects, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance and modernize the Barcelona Metro network.

Rolling Stock

Line 4 utilizes the Barcelona Metro 9000 Series rolling stock, which is employed across several lines, including Line 2, Line 4, Line 9, and Line 10. These modern trains ensure a reliable and efficient service for passengers.
