Anwar Ibrahim
Anwar bin Ibrahim (born 10 August 1947) is a prominent Malaysian political figure who assumed office as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia in 2022. He is a key member of the People's Justice Party (PKR) and has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tambun since the same year. In addition to his role as Prime Minister, he appointed himself as the Minister of Finance, highlighting his influential position in the Malaysian political landscape.
Anwar was born in Cherok Tok Kun, Bukit Mertajam, in what was then the Crown Colony of Penang, part of the Malayan Union. In a later address during the 2023 state elections, he mentioned Sungai Bakap, Seberang Perai Selatan, as his birthplace. His mother, Che Yan binti Hussein, was an active participant in UMNO grassroots politics, serving as head of the UMNO Women for the Bukit Mertajam division.
Anwar’s political journey began when he was elected as Seberang Tengah MP in 1959 and again in 1964. He held the position of parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Health until his defeat in the 1969 general election by Mustapha Hussain of the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia.
Anwar Ibrahim played a crucial role in the formation and leadership of the PKR. Following his significant involvement, particularly during the 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis, Anwar emerged as a pivotal figure leading the coalition government, known as Pakatan Harapan. This coalition is often referred to as a national unity government. His ascent to prime ministership came after a hung parliament scenario in the 2022 election, where his leadership was deemed essential for forming a stable government.
Anwar Ibrahim's career has been marked by several high-profile controversies, notably the sodomy trials that began in 1998. These trials have been a significant source of political controversy and have played a central role in shaping both his political journey and public perception.
As a leader, Anwar has been active in regional diplomacy, taking part in important summits such as the 2025 ASEAN Summits. His proposals and diplomatic efforts have highlighted Malaysia's role on the international stage, especially in regional conflict resolution, such as during the 2025 Cambodian–Thai border crisis.
Anwar Ibrahim's political journey is emblematic of the rapid shifts and reforms within Malaysian politics, making him a central figure in the nation's recent history.
