Yoshihide Suga
Yoshihide Suga, born on 6 December 1948, is a prominent Japanese politician who served as the Prime Minister of Japan from 2020 to 2021. He is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and has been a significant political figure in Japan for several decades. Suga was born in a rural area of Akita Prefecture, into a family of strawberry farmers. His early life in a farming family has often been cited as a foundation for his work ethic and pragmatic approach to governance.
Suga's political journey began after he graduated from Hosei University and moved to Tokyo, where he worked as an aide to Representative Hikosaburo Okonogi in 1975. His political career took a decisive turn when he was elected to the Yokohama Municipal Assembly in 1987. Suga then ascended to national politics by winning a seat in the House of Representatives representing Kanagawa's 2nd district in 1996.
Suga became closely aligned with Shinzo Abe, another influential figure in Japanese politics. During Abe's first term as Prime Minister in 2006, Suga served as the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications. His role expanded as he was later appointed as the Chief Cabinet Secretary in Abe's subsequent administration, a position he held from 2012 until he became Prime Minister in 2020.
When Shinzo Abe resigned in 2020 due to health issues, Suga emerged as his successor, taking office on September 16, 2020. His government, known as the Suga Cabinet, was a coalition government that sought continuity with Abe's policies, focusing on issues such as economic recovery, digital transformation, and handling the COVID-19 pandemic. Suga's tenure was marked by efforts to accelerate the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines and digitalize government services.
Despite these efforts, his administration faced challenges such as managing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics during the pandemic and dealing with internal party dynamics. Facing dwindling support and hesitancy from his party, Suga announced on September 3, 2021, that he would not seek reelection in the upcoming LDP presidential election, effectively resigning from the position of Prime Minister. His term officially concluded on October 4, 2021, when he was succeeded by Fumio Kishida.
Yoshihide Suga is married to Mariko Suga, and they have three sons. His personal life, much like his political career, is centered on a sense of duty and modesty, often reflecting the rural values from his upbringing.
