History of York Preparatory School
York Preparatory School, often referred to as York Prep School, is an independent, coeducational university-preparatory school located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. Established in September 1969, the school was founded by Ronald Stewart and Jayme Stewart (née Spahn), both of whom envisioned an institution that would offer an academic environment tailored to diverse student learning styles and abilities.
Since its inception, York Prep School has grown significantly. It initially opened its doors to 158 students spanning grades 6 through 12, and by 1972, the student body had expanded to 212. Today, the school maintains a selective enrollment of approximately 350 students, maintaining its commitment to small class sizes and individualized attention.
York Prep is known for its unique academic system called "tracking," which allows students to be placed in ability groups within every subject area, aligning with the founders' belief in differentiated learning. This system enables the school to provide a rigorous liberal arts education, covering core disciplines such as English, mathematics, social studies, science, and foreign languages. Additionally, students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of specialized electives, enhancing their educational experience and preparing them for higher education.
As with many educational institutions, tuition at York Prep is a consideration, with fees set at USD 64,560 for the academic year 2024-2025. The school also offers unique programs such as Jumpstart, priced at USD 95,237, and ITP at USD 80,973, reflecting its diverse offerings.
York Prep is part of the Ivy Preparatory School League, a prestigious athletic conference of preparatory schools in New York City, emphasizing not only academic excellence but also athletic prowess and development.
In June 2023, York Prep announced a transition in leadership with a new Head of School stepping in to continue its legacy of providing quality education while adapting to the changing educational landscape.
