Yemen
Yemen is a country located at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula, bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the northeast. The country includes several islands, most notably the Socotra Archipelago.
Yemen is predominantly mountainous with diverse climatic conditions. The western part of the country features the Tihamah coastal plain, which includes arid regions, while the highlands receive more precipitation and are more conducive to agriculture. The eastern part of the country comprises the Rub' al Khali desert, known as the Empty Quarter, which is sparsely populated.
Yemen's strategic location at the southern entrance of the Red Sea has made it an important crossroads for trade and cultural exchange since ancient times. The region was known in antiquity for its incense trade and was home to several ancient kingdoms, including the Sabaean Kingdom.
The modern history of Yemen is shaped by its colonial past and the division between North and South Yemen. The Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established in the north after the decline of the Ottoman Empire, while the south became a British protectorate, known as the Aden Protectorate.
In 1967, the southern region became independent as the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen), adopting a socialist government. The northern region became the Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. Unification of North and South Yemen occurred in 1990, forming the current Republic of Yemen.
Yemen has experienced significant political instability, with tensions arising from tribal affiliations, sectarian divisions, and economic challenges. The Yemeni Civil War, ongoing since 2014, involves several factions, including Houthi rebels, government forces, and a Saudi-led coalition. This conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis in the region.
Yemen's culture is rich and diverse, reflecting its historical position as a crossroads of trade and civilizations. The population predominantly practices Islam, and Arabic is the main language spoken in various dialects. Yemeni culture is expressed through traditional music, dance, and architecture, with the Old City of Sana'a being a notable example of traditional Yemeni architecture.
Yemen's economy heavily relies on agriculture, fisheries, and remittances. The country has modest reserves of oil and natural gas, which are primarily exported. However, Yemen faces significant economic challenges, including high unemployment and poverty rates, exacerbated by ongoing conflict.
